Mission to be Continue...

‘Ring A Life’ campaign had finally ended gracefully.  I am very happy to be able to work with the turtle bot for the event. During the event, the process is very challenging but at the same time it was also an opportunity given to me to learn more about the subject matter and myself.

I’m one of the members in logistic department. At first, we have been received an order and task to build a new recycle bin for electronic gadgets such as tablets, laptops and others computer accessories. Previously, Microsoft has only pledged to donate 1USD for each phone collected only, but this year Microsoft will SAVE a turtle in beneficiary to WWF Malaysia to support their turtle conservation project with every phone, laptop and tablets devices collected. The range of the collection has been increased, and it makes us have higher chances to "Ring" more lives!  It also makes extra difficulties and challenges for logistic department to build another big bin to place bigger size of gadgets. 

Working towards a better future for turtles. 

Due to the theme of this recycle campaign, we have to use environmental friendly materials and tools instead of using polystyrene which unable to recycle. The recycle bin needs to be big enough to place big size of electronic gadgets and most importantly we need to ensure the stability of the bin and security problems. After long process of discussion and consideration with others logistic department members, we came out a better idea and solution.

 After few days’ effort and amendment, we have finally created bigger recycle bin by using Recycle wood from previous event.

Finally, after 3 days event, we have achieved our target and high achievement total 1346 devices collected. Even actual events have ended gracefully, however turtle conservation project never end by just like this. The mission of saving turtles still ongoing, therefore we are still encouraging public to donate their old electronic gadgets. The recycle bins have been place at Block Q besides the water dispenses area. Students and staff are welcome to drop any of their old phone and electronic gadgets. Turtlebots mission never end! Let’s continue Ring a Life. Connecting lives, Transforming Lives.

Yes! We have successfully took the sea turtles back to their home!

Hello everyone, I am one of the turtlebots who named Clare Khoo Yiing Chyen and I am in charging in a game booth – Take Me Home. The concept of this game is to let the participants who bring the sea turtle back to their natural life which is the sea. As we know that sea turtles are about to extinct, humans have the right to conserve sea turtle to create a balance and healthy eco-system. Moreover, the learning outcome of this game is to create a strong awareness among TARUC students in order to involve themselves in this meaningful campaign. The badge which mentions that he or she will be the sea turtle hero might show their supports to this campaign.

            

First of all, there is only 1 player available in 1 game. The player needs to stand at the “X” point and use his or her mouth to blow the sea turtle to either 3 parts. The player who able to achieve the 3 parts which are the love shape, green sea and blue sea will be rewarded a gift. There are 3 chances given to all players within 1 minute. Besides, obstacles such as stone and plastic will make the game more challengeable for the entire sea turtles hero as the mirror of reality on the beach, there are full of rubbish. Once the sea turtle stopped by these obstacles, it considered as game over. Do you want me to demonstrate for you? For the 3 days on-ground event, quite a number of people visit to our campaign. I am happy with that as many people aware of our campaign and involve themselves to join this meaningful campaign. There are few funny things during the event especially I am handling this game booth – Take Me Home. After I explain the game instruction, there are a lot of people questioning me “Is it possible to blow to there ah?” or “OMG, are you sure there are people who able to do this?” In this moment, I am like a superwoman and propose myself to demonstrate for the player to show the fairness of the game. 

YES, I am able to blow the sea turtle to the goal – blue sea frequently. Again, do you want me do demonstrate for you? Please do visit http://youtu.be/ukxOgm7gdCY . After my demonstration, most of the players just like feeling “WOW” and some even clap for me (Thank You Very Muchieee). Be honest, actually this game seems like very easy but you need to have some technique to win it.  First, you have to focus the sea turtle and the path that you want to blow. Secondly, for sure you need to blow harder. Thirdly, you need to put your image away first; blow as hard as you can and focus your mouth gas, then you can easily win the game then become sea turtle hero! (Just like me, ignore my image first then just blooowww it harder J) But a very funny thing, since 3pm onwards, I normally have no gas to blow anymore (Our campaign start from 9am to 5pm), thanks to my partner @Enrique Fok assist me while I am exhausted. He also the one who able to do this! Although super fatigue, but it is worth for me to involve in this meaningful campaign and interact with a lot of friendly and cute participants.

          

As last, I would like to express my appreciation to all my family, friends, relatives and lecturers who show support and help me so much, I'm much obliged to you for helping us. Thanks for my lovely crews for helping to take care of my booth when I am away, thanks for my friends and lecturers who purposely come and visit us and donate their precious old phones, laptop and tablet, especially credit to Mr Julius Ang Sze Yen, Thanks for supporting me and your kind donation, love you so much. Moreover, I would like to thank for our campaign advisor Ms Lim Siz Siz for guiding us in order to make our event going smoothly. Finally our campaign comes to an end, although I am exhausted but I really likes event! Dear turtlebots, we done a great job! Our hard work and sweat turned into the number 1346 J Ring A Life rocks!!!

Sea turtle in Danger Information Booth

During our events (16^th – 18^th July 2014), I was in charged in part of the information booth and it is called “Sea Turtle in Danger”. The most important message that we wanted to bring to our audiences and participants was the information of how sea turtles are in danger and what consequences that they are facing and might cause them to extinct in the future or soon. Therefore, my teammates and I had decorated the booth with pictures and some materials that can create awareness to the audiences. Here are some pictures of my booth:

The first reason that causes sea turtles in danger is because of the selfishness and greediness of human being. They stole sea turtles’ eggs to do some illegal business, example like sell the eggs to other people as food. In addition, they also put baby sea turtle into a plastic bag with chemical liquid to make it as live key-chain.

Second reason is about predators of sea turtles. There are few animals that will consume sea turtles as food such as dogs, ghost crabs, raccoons, sea gulls, crows. They will eat their eggs, some eat the baby sea turtles which are just hatched from the eggs and wanted to crawl back to sea.

The last reason is also caused by the human being and we called it fishery-related mortality. It has been identified as a major cause of accidental sea turtles’ deaths because sea turtles must go on the surface of water to breathe but they have caught in fishermen’s net and they are unable to go on the surface of water, thus drown.

So, when I was explaining the reasons to the audiences, I could read the responses from them which were telling me that they were quite agree with the reasons. Some also told me that they will boycott those people who used sea turtles as business to earn money. I hope I have done a good job in creating awareness to the audiences and so can increase the chances of prevent sea turtles to extinction.

The GIANT Toys

Despite the event – ‘Ring A Life’ has already come to an end, but it’s still ours, the TurtleBots’ responsibilities to keep all the platforms up-to-date. Frankly speaking, even the event has already ended for two days, as one of the committees for the event, every single memory is still fresh in my mind. It is definitely a great experience for me to work with people from different classes as in how we will have to face when we step into working industry. Dealing with people with different characteristics may be difficult. However, it doesn’t block me from learning how to communicate with them. I believe the event has brought all of us together, a platform for us to meet and know each other. Alright, enough with the long speech, let’s see what I’ve prepared for today’s blog post… TADAAAAA! I’m going to introduce you the two giant and remarkable toys that symbolized for this event.

Alright, if you’ve came to our event, you’ll definitely know how these two giant models work right? For your information, the models are placed at the front part of our booth. An eye catching central point perhaps? Well, it’s definitely one of our strategies to catch people attention. *Smiling Face*

Wondering how do we make these giant models? Well, let me explain to you right now. Both of the models are made by recycling materials such as woods, newspapers, cartons and etc. Doesn’t it look awesome? It really proves us that recycling materials can be so useful and contributes for almost every parts of our set up. For your information again, we are advised to use recycling materials for whole set up, decoration, and etc. At the early stage, I was worried about how can we use recycling materials for whole set up, is that possible? And now, it makes me believe that THIS IS POSSIBLE. Well done, TurtleBots!

This is how Nokia Lumia 920 model works:

First: Insert the green form you get from the registration booth. *Note: It must be a green form as this is the last stage for the participants who have donated their old gadgets. The participants are requested to visit the Lumia 920 model to get their lucky draw numbers and some mystery gifts.

Second: As what was written on the model, the participants are requested to say ‘Ring A Life’ and gave a hug to the giant Lumia.

Third: There will be free gifts giving out at this stage. The mystery gifts included T shirt, a box of pencils, recycled bag, badges, note books and etc.

Last: Participants will be given lucky draw numbers according to the number of old gadgets donated. They are advised to come over Canteen 2 Concourse on Friday 4.30pm for lucky draw session.

Next, here comes the giant sea turtle with red body. You must be wondering why do we apply red color on its body right? Well, this is a concept we applied on our saving sea turtle event. Each participants will be given a small green paper with sea turtle shape and they are requested to paste it on sea turtle body as a contribution to save sea turtles. And this is how the concept – from red to green, being applied on this giant model. The participants can also write their thoughts on the paper given before they paste it on the sea turtles. Isn’t it a simple and meaningful job?

The VIPs and guests paid their contributions by sticking their wishes on the body of giant sea turtle.

This is how the giant sea turtle looks like during the end of our closing ceremony. The body is being filled with a lot of loves and wishes from all the participants. The TurtleBots would like to say thank you to every single one of YOU for being so supportive in this event. The giant sea turtle has successfully transformed from red to green! Huurayyyyyyy

Making the Impossible, Possible

I remembered the time when our campaign advisor told us that we are require to break our senior’s record of 1,001 phones collected in their campaign, ‘Connect to Conserve’, and my mind was filled with disbelief, thinking it is a dream that will never manifest into a reality. However, as what Christopher Reeve said, ‘so many of our dreams at first seems impossible, then they seem improbable, and then, when we summon the will, they soon become inevitable’. True enough, that dream turned into a reality. Yesterday events marks the day, where ‘Ring A Life 2014’ successfully broke previous year’s record with a collection of 1,346 phones, laptops and tablets collected.

Marking a New Record

Most importantly,  I would like to first of all, express my deepest gratitude and appreciation to TAR UC for giving me the opportunity to be exposed and had hands-on experience conducting the campaign as well as working alongside with and for organizations that are internationally well-known such as Microsoft and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF-Malaysia). Not to forget, this campaign would not have turn into a success without the constant guidance from our campaign advisor as well as the great effort and passion of ‘Turtlebots’, the crew of ‘Ring A Life 2014’. 

Looking back, it was truly a remarkable experience. Although, there were ups and downs, it was a great journey that is of great worth to be shared. In this campaign, my role as a chairperson is to lead and supervise all things and matters relating to the campaign. To be honest, I am still a novice when it comes to leading a campaign, which posed a great challenge to me. However, thanks to this campaign, I had learnt many things regarding leadership, as well as organizing a campaign. These experiences will definitely prepare both me and my members for the working world especially those that are related to our line of study.  

Organizing a campaign is not something that can be done in a matter of days as it requires planning, paperwork, meetings and et cetera. However, it is still possible to have fun and enjoy along the way together with members of the campaign through activities like flash mob, patrol and preparing props for the campaign.

All in all, the campaign was a huge success and I hope and have faith that juniors in future will achieve greater things. Moreover, I encourage everyone, both young and old to continue to contribute through electronic gadget recycling to help fund WWF-Malaysia sea turtles conservation efforts. Despite, the campaign coming to a close, you can still continue to make electronic recycling a habit and remember to ‘Ring A Life’!.

Last Day, TARUC’s students Registered Be Sea Turtles Hero!

Yesterday was the last day of our wonderful campaign! Here I would like to express the feeling of how excited we were. During the last day (18^th July 2014) of our event “RING A LIFE”, registration booth was full of people compared with the first and second day. There was insufficient space and pen for the people to fill up their forms due to the large crowd during the event. This is a good learning experience as we can learn how to handle a huge crowd of people. Experience learned can be used in future to improve the campaign. We are really thankful for those TARUC’s students that participate in this meaningful saving sea turtle event. There were huge number of students whom not only participate in the various type of station games but also bring along with their unused gadget for instances laptops, tablets and phones for recycling in order to save sea turtles. There were also several students who are very passionate and participated our event continuously for three days. 

There were a big yellow machine and a big sea turtle stationed at the center of our campaign. It created great awareness for the students who passed by when they go for their breakfast or lunch in canteen 2.

 Ushers play an important roles at that moment! Along with the assistance of the usher’s girls, we managed to attract a lot of people to inquiry about our campaign’s purpose and details. Some students might be confused if they weren’t given a detailed explanation of the campaign, they might question the connection between donating electronic gadgets and saving sea turtles. With the help and support of usher’s girls, we were able to explain to them that Microsoft is donating 1USD to WWF when they had received an old phone for recycling.

Students are required to fill in an evaluation form after they completed all of the six station games. After reviewing most of the evaluation forms, we were glad that we receive a positive feedback from the students. Most of the comments stated that our campaign was full of educational purposes and it was interesting! The only downside was insufficient types of free gifts which can distributed for the winner. The free gifts which encompassed note books, pencil boxes and badges which can be won in different types of stations games. A number of students didn’t want the gifts as they had already got it from the previous stations.

During the last two more hours, the numbers of participants increase rapidly. The registration and evaluation form had already ran out. It is a good sign for our “RING A LIFE” campaign as students is supporting us by donating all their electronic gadgets. Some of them are still willing to return to college and donate their gadgets as they have been informed that our collection session was extended until Saturday (19^th July 2014).

We Made It!

Every start has an end. For as much, Ring A Life campaign has comes to the end :D and I’m so glad that we ended this campaign SUCCESSFULLY! Hereby, We, TURTLEBOTS would like to truly thank you guys for joining us and support us in these 3 days, especially every TURTLEHEROES out there! Thank your for donated your unwanted phones, laptops, tablets and other gadgets in order to save our sea turtles!
I do remember some of the faces! They came everyday and enjoyed the mini games with us <3

Wondering how succeed it was? Tadaaa* There were ONE THOUSAND THREE HUNDREDS and FORTY-SIX! 1346 phone, tablets and laptops have been collected by the turtlebots from all the TURTLEHEROES!
TURTLEHEROES ROCKS! Without you guys, turtlebots definitely would not able to get such a good results and we even manage to hit our target- 1002. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Yes! Today was the last day of Ring A Life campaign. Our mini games were conducted in the morning as usual just like how Day 1 and Day 2 were. And we started Ring A Life campaign’s closing ceremony at around 4:45pm. I believe this was the most awaiting moment of every turtleheroes! Because it’s the time to reveal who will be the LUCKY WINNER to bring our ASHA 502 or LUMIA 920 home!

Before the grand prizes were announced, turtleheroes stand chances to win our consolation prizes such as goodies bags, T-shirt and thumb drive as well!

Alright! Initially the purpose of this lucky draw was to reward our TURTLEHEROES for support in this campaign and be one of the turtleHERO to save our beloved seaturtles!

Last but not least, “Every start has an end and every end has a new beginning”. Begins to save sea turtles from today and spread the words to your family and friends. You should not have stopped it if you have already begun. Although this campaign has over but we, TURTLEBOTS do hope that we did raise your awareness of the conservation of sea turtles and as well as the knowledge of recycling phones, tablet and laptop (A PHONE CAN BE RECYCLE 100% of it) Please continue to do our part, save sea turtles as we could as well as other nature creation. The SPIRITS of Turtlebots and Turtleheroes will always be there!

Before I end, I would like say: “I’m so proud of you guys TURTLEBOTS!”

We had really done a pretty good job though it wasn’t an easy task for us and it’s kinda tiring. However, WE MADE IT! WE CONQUERED IT! And now, time for us to get a good rest, to RE-CHARGE our battery and together we continue fight for the future!

Goodbye everyone. We, Ring A Life-Turtlebots would like to once again say thank to all of you and do not forget us! CONNECTING LIVES, TRANSFORMING LIVES! Sea turtles need us not only for a day but until they are free from danger. Together we save turtles!
