Last Day, TARUC’s students Registered Be Sea Turtles Hero!

Yesterday was the last day of our wonderful campaign! Here I would like to express the feeling of how excited we were. During the last day (18th July 2014) of our event “RING A LIFE”, registration booth was full of people compared with the first and second day. There was insufficient space and pen for the people to fill up their forms due to the large crowd during the event. This is a good learning experience as we can learn how to handle a huge crowd of people. Experience learned can be used in future to improve the campaign. We are really thankful for those TARUC’s students that participate in this meaningful saving sea turtle event. There were huge number of students whom not only participate in the various type of station games but also bring along with their unused gadget for instances laptops, tablets and phones for recycling in order to save sea turtles. There were also several students who are very passionate and participated our event continuously for three days.

There were a big yellow machine and a big sea turtle stationed at the center of our campaign. It created great awareness for the students who passed by when they go for their breakfast or lunch in canteen 2.

Ushers play an important roles at that moment! Along with the assistance of the usher’s girls, we managed to attract a lot of people to inquiry about our campaign’s purpose and details. Some students might be confused if they weren’t given a detailed explanation of the campaign, they might question the connection between donating electronic gadgets and saving sea turtles. With the help and support of usher’s girls, we were able to explain to them that Microsoft is donating 1USD to WWF when they had received an old phone for recycling.

Students are required to fill in an evaluation form after they completed all of the six station games. After reviewing most of the evaluation forms, we were glad that we receive a positive feedback from the students. Most of the comments stated that our campaign was full of educational purposes and it was interesting! The only downside was insufficient types of free gifts which can distributed for the winner. The free gifts which encompassed note books, pencil boxes and badges which can be won in different types of stations games. A number of students didn’t want the gifts as they had already got it from the previous stations.

During the last two more hours, the numbers of participants increase rapidly. The registration and evaluation form had already ran out. It is a good sign for our “RING A LIFE” campaign as students is supporting us by donating all their electronic gadgets. Some of them are still willing to return to college and donate their gadgets as they have been informed that our collection session was extended until Saturday (19th July 2014).

TAR UC Successfully Ended the Campaign with the Collection of 1346 Recycling Phone

First of all, well done TurtleBots!!!
Our three days campaign, “Ring A Life” have successfully ended and the TurtleBots (crews) are able to break through the pass three years records which we managed to collect a total amount of 1346 unwanted phones, tablets and laptops. Therefore, 1346 of sea turtles will be benefitted under the World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF) Malaysia’s sea turtle conservation program.

Figure 1: TurtleBots were “Ringing” with our successful result together.

I am one of the members from Media Relations Team in the “Ring A Life” campaign, and for me this is the very first campaign has given me a precious opportunity in approaching with media and experiencing how to work together with media, which all those I can never learn from the pass theoretical learning. Especially, it is very less opportunity for university college’s students like us to work together with big corporations like Microsoft Devices and WWF-Malaysia.

In addition, every single media paper works to be done was tougher than what I have imagined and predicted before the campaign. For instance, when the first time we approached media, my team members and I found out that not many media were not able to attend our launching ceremony or rejected our invitation, we did feel depressed at the moment, but at the end we did not give up and try our best to write an impressive post event release and hopefully can make the media to cover and publish our news.

Figure 2: First experience while approaching the Media.

Furthermore, the way we practice writing press release in tutorial class is a big different when it came to a real campaign, especially when I need to write in a Chinese version press release. Every single word when typed out, I have to think and structure the sentence carefully and smoothly. Therefore, today when the campaign ended after 5pm, my team members and I stayed until 11pm to produce a post event release. From that, I would like to thank our campaign advisory, Ms. Lim Siz Siz in guiding us patiently in the whole writing process.

“Ring A Life” is a very meaningful phone recycling campaign in order to save sea turtle, therefore, our action will never end after these three days campaign. TurtleBots will continue in sharing and conveying the message at Primary and Secondary schools around Setapak area in order to educate them the responsibility and habit to protect and conserve the environmental and the ocean. So, stay tune and check our information from the official Facebook Website: www.facebook.com/ringalife.

Nothing Stop Turtlebots From Saving Turtles!!!

Today is the last day for Ring A Life: Connecting Lives, Transforming Life campaign. As the previous post mentioned, a red emergency light “rang” up the TurtleBots and we are worried about the amount of the recycled phones/laptops/tablets would not able to hit target that we have  promised. Nevertheless, TurtleBots kick started theit turbo and did their best to collect the unwanted electronic gadgets at out-campus. TurtleBots’ fighting spirit is getting STRONGER than ever!!!

The TurtleBot Leader is practising her speech

It is the last day of “Ring A Life” campaign, today’s result is far more better than the previous two days. TurtleBots are doing their best to “ring” more calls regarding the awareness of the conservation sea turtle in Malaysia as well as the knowledge of recycling unwanted electronic gadgets (phone/tablet/laptop).

Day 3, all the TurtleBots welcomed the working day by having a short briefing and rehearsal of closing ceremony as to ensure everything runs smoothly in the last day of the campaign *FINGER CROSSING*. Who doesn’t want a happy ending anyway? In the afternoon, some of the TurtleBots still are striking their last best shot to meet TurtleHeroes (donors) from outside campus. WE WANT TO “RING MORE LIVES”!

So I would like to sum up the key messages of conserving sea turtles:

Rule 1: Understand the species of sea turtle in Malaysia as well as their life cycle. It is very important as it will not be effective if one does not understand about the species that they are trying to protect.
Rule 2: Lend your helping hand to save sea turtles. Your unwanted old electronic gadgets can save turtles as a tiny little action may change everything. WWF-Malaysia is a non-profit organization so they need TurtleHeroes to support their conservation efforts.
Rule 3: Do not harm sea turtles. Sea turtles are harmless and beautiful creature that deserve to be saved.
Rule 4: Join WWF-Malaysia to become a turtle guardian. All you need to do is to donate money to support their equipment and field running costs, so that they can carry out the program smoothly and successfully.

For more information, you can visit to WWF-Malaysia website: http://pandashop.my/turtleguardian/
Last but not least, please come to TAR UC Canteen 2 Concourse Area and show your support to TurtleBots. Today is the last day of the campaign! There are a lot of prizes waiting for you here! Let’s join us to be a TurtleHero as we really need your help. What goes around comes around, “Ring A Life”, Connectting Lives, Transforming Lives.

“RingALife” DAY 2

Hi everyone, it was “RingALife” last day 2 campaign! Had you enjoyed yourself in our event?

Turtlebots are going to share with you guys who have missed out in day 2. At 9 am, we start to "ring" the call for joining us to "Ring A Life"at canteen 2 concourse.

Turtlebots were so attentive to approach the students by persuading them to donate their unwanted electronic gadgets (phone/ tablet/ laptop) as well as eduacting them about turtle conservation.

We are learned from mistakes, not from success. Day two is driving even better than yesterday since we w
ere able to turn the messy flow into accordance. During the peak hour of canteen 2, Turtlebots started their turbo on duty and have did their best to educate the students in a fun way. The participants were happy come, happy go!

During a short briefing after Day 2 run down, a red emergency red light "rang" up the Turtlebots! We are having an emergency situation where we might not hit our target on Day 3. Even we were so upset, but it did not stop the Turtlebots to figure out a solution in order in order to save more sea turtles. Btw, we are all PR STUDENTS, we need to think OUT-OF-THE-BOX.

What’s happening here? Turtlebots have quickly decided to fix the situation by working together at out side campus! Yeah! Is our campaign, we should fight until the last minute! Turtlebots are ready to take off and "Ring More Lives". Turtlebots never disappoint the sea turtles, many unwanted phones, tabloid and laptops were collected!

However, the amount is still counting......

It will be “RingALife” last day campaign and  I felt that I have a very complicated feelings which is sad and happy in the same time. We work hard, we cried, we laugh and we will never forget WE ARE TURTLEBOTS! I felt really glad that TAR UC, Microsoft have given us a chance to contribute to the eco-system not forgetting WWF-Malaysia. I REALLY APPRECIATE IT VERY MUCH!

Please do come and support us

The Launching Ceremony of Ring A Life campaign

After brainstorming weeks, pre-event weeks and finally, today is the actual day for all the Turtlebots were praying for-THE LAUNCHING CEREMONY OF “RING A LIFE”! All the uncountable efforts and preparation just to ensure everything goes smooth during this campaign is going to be officiated by today! I am incredibly excited!

At 6:30am today, all the Turtlebots have stand by for the final rehearsal. Then, the butterflies start flying in my stomach when the clock ticked at 10 a.m. The Guest of Honour, VIPs and the respective media arrived at 10:15am. The flow run in our expectation and so, follow by giving out speech initially presented by President of TAR UC, Ybhg Datuk Dr. Tan Chik Heok, then Senior Manager of Regional Sustainability, Microsoft Devices Mr. Francis Cheong and lastly, the representative of WWF Ms. Suan Tan.

Ybhg Datuk Dr. Tan Chik Heok, Mr. Francis Cheong and Ms. Suan Tan accompanied by the Turtlebots Mascot, launched the opening ceremony by the creative mobile phone domino as an act of transforming their pledge into recycling effort. The ceremony closure with a remarkable flash mob by combining contemporary dance and turtle movement.  The particular session gain an impressive moment for the audiences and we tend to get tons of positive feedbacks.

The exhibition tour was carried out by our "Ring A Life" president, Kristien Gan as to guide the honourable guests and VIPs to visit our fun and educated booths. And finally, there was a media interview section implemented by "Ring A Life" media relations at the mini garden along with well-prepared refreshments. At 1.30 pm, when everybody is finally relief of the launching ceremony, HITZ FM CRUISER CAME! It was really happening today!

A Thought of Media Relations

According to Facebook statistic from socialbakers, there are over 13 million actives Facebook users in the world, which is a pretty BIG number…

It is beyond a way from converse with friends to a powerful tool for public relations. Facebook has various features including status updates, uploading photos along with locations, etc and advancing still. As for the students, Facebook is a decent tool for us to publicize our “Ring A Life”, a recycling electronic gadgets campaign with Industry Leader Microsoft and in support of World Wide Fund for Nature Malaysia (WWF). WHY? IS FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!

During the pre-event week, publicity department came out an idea where we need to change our Facebook profile picture in black and white, along with our “Ring A Life” logos tagline, and the most interest part is, our nose were being replaced by a cropped TURTLE HEAD! AWWSOOmeeeeeeee~

Changing profile picture is more on engagement people and it require a deeper level of interaction. The caption, the photo I uploaded is literally representing MY OWN SELF, is my profile anyway. It requires me to communicate more! The black and white profile picture with a green turtle nose caught an eye of my Facebook friends. They even ask “Is this a trend?”, “What with the turtle nose?”, “You are saving turtle?”, “I love your captions!” I get feedbacks!

Since the profile picture is sort of HIT for me, oh well, I suggested among the media relations team, and we agreed to attach the profile picture in our pre-event press release. I JUST DON’T WANT TO LOSE THIS OPPORTUNITY! Then I realized, all matter just that the photos we need to attach is less than a lot to the content part. I have gain a lot of tips from our Lecturer (Miss Lim) on how to frame the idea of our pre-event in the press released. I can hardly explain in literally on what I have learnt, it is all based on our critical thinking, we need to get our hands on only we will gain something far beneath.

Today, “Ring A Life” was officially “rang” at TAR UC (KL) canteen 2 concourse. The flash mob accompanied by Turtlebot mascot made a remark on everybody’s mind and the refreshment (chocolate cheese cakes & mineral water) were gone smooth. However, the media interview session is a NEW thing for me. I was wondering and panic on what should I do in that particular situation.

A whisper then just cut off my wonder, “Try to listen what is the conversation and try to remember it” Miss Lim whispered.  Sooner or later, we just rushed for the on ground press released. Unfortunately, we were not able to make it by 5pm as to publish for the evening news. A life spent making mistakes is not only more honourable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing. Yes, we failed to do it but at least, there will not be a crowd of press released which might confuse media as the post event press released should be the main released including the final number of electronic gadgets (phone/tablet/laptop) collected.

A real decision is measured by the fact that you've taken a new action. If there's no action, you haven't truly decided. Make up your mind now, search for your unwanted electronic gadgets (phone/tablet/laptop) and donate it at “RING A LIFE” campaign, The Turtlebots still have two days (17-18July) kicking up at TAR UC (KL) canteen 2 concourse! Save our MOTHER (earth) and protect our BROTHERS (sea turtles)! We gave you the solution and you just need to join us in connecting lives, transforming lives. #ringalife
