People often ask why do human need to put so
much effort to protect sea turtles and why they are so important?!!!
There are several reasons why we, as human beings, should help to make
sure that sea turtles do not become extinct!
1. Sea turtles have been
on the earth, more or less unchanged in form, since before the dinosaurs.
The sea turtles are probably one of the oldest
groups of animals in the earth. Their body design is so successful and
beautiful that they have even been able to survive the extinction of the
dinosaurs! But now, human have came along and changed the world. Not only the
land but now it has come to affect the oceans. We are causing sea turtles to
become globally endangered and cause it to become extinct like dinosaurs!
2. Some sea turtles feed
on sea grasses and corals and are thought to be an important predator keeping
the animals and plants of the reef in check.
Without them, some species of seaweed, coral, or
sponge might grow too much and cause other species of reef animals or plants to
die off. Hence, it will cause the ecosystem to be unbalance.
3. Sea turtles provide a
particularly unique chance to see a large wild animal up close in its natural
habitat, at a very vulnerable time.
It is hard to see most animals during their
reproductive cycle, yet it is possible to watch turtles from the time their
mother lays them as an egg, to the point where they hatch and run into the
beach. There are no comparable examples of this in the world, and there are
both important educational tools and strong attraction for people all round the
world. Besides, it is also a very good example for parents and teachers to
teach their future generations so that they will not only learn from books and
words like dinosaurs but they able to see it in real life.
4. We still don’t know
enough about sea turtles.
Scientists all around the world are studying
aspects of the biology of sea turtles from sight and hearing to metabolism and
digestion, but we still do not know exactly what would happen to the world if
sea turtles were no longer a part of it. It is really important that we need to
make sure sea turtles do not die out or extinct before it is too late!
Therefore, the students from Bachelor Degree in
Public Relations, Tunku Abdul Rahman University College organize a green
campaign ‘Ring A Life’
partnering with Microsoft Devices in support of World Wide Fund for Nature
Malaysia (WWF), to create awareness of the importance of this awesome nature
creature - sea turtle towards the society. Public are able to learn, play and
enjoy during the campaign held in Canteen 2 Concourse, Tunku Abdul Rahman
University College KL, from 16th - 18th July 2014.
